The Power of the Mind

This weekend I was reminded of the power of our mind and the choice that we get to make minute-by-minute, hour-by-hour, day-by-day, and week-by-week. We get to choose what thoughts we dwell on every day. One thought that is entertained can determine the whole course of a situation and/or day, affecting everything that we do. But the great thing about choices is that we can choose to change our thought pattern and improve on it at any moment. It is never too late!

After being diagnosed with an injury in February and having a long, slow road to recovery, I am just finally at a place where workouts are beginning to be incorporated. Saturday we did a hill circuit workout and each loop I got further and further behind. The further behind I got, the more I was tempted to be discouraged by the gap between where I am and where I want to be. But then I realized I had a choice. I could choose to allow myself to get discouraged and struggle through the rest of the workout or I could choose to embrace where I am, celebrate growth, and complete the workout with a positive frame of mind. Thankfully, I was able to choose the latter.

Sometimes it is tempting to be so focused on where we want to be or where we think we should be that the gap between that and reality clouds our perception of how far we have come. But it is vital that we don’t lose sight of the growth that has occurred. If we choose to actively celebrate the growth and be grateful for the opportunity to be where we are, it is much easier to stay positive and find joy in the midst of any situation. And who doesn’t want to be a positive, joy-filled person? I know I do!

I hope that along this journey of getting back into running I can continue to choose to focus on the progress I have made. I want to operate out of a place of celebrating that and being grateful for the opportunity to be on my feet again, not dwelling on the gap of how far I have to go. I want to be positive and filled with joy, excited for what is to come! By recognizing that it all starts with the mind, I feel empowered to choose to do so!
